The Self-Publishing Roadmap for First-Time Authors

Self-publishing your first book can feel like walking into a room full of acronyms. KDP, ISBN, ePub, trim size, bleed, categories, keywords. It’s easy to get stuck before you start.

It doesn’t have to be that complicated. Here’s the whole journey in plain English, from finished manuscript to a book you can hold, sell and be proud of.

Step 1: Finish (really finish) the manuscript

Before you think about covers or Amazon:

  • Edit it. Then have someone else edit it. Every author misses their own mistakes.
  • Get a few test readers who fit your target audience. Ask what confused them, not just whether they liked it.
  • Settle on your title and subtitle. For nonfiction, the subtitle should say exactly what the reader gets.

Step 2: Decide where and how you’ll publish

Most self-published authors start with Amazon KDP, which handles ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers with no upfront printing costs. Many also use IngramSpark to reach bookstores and libraries.

You’ll also decide on formats. An ebook and a paperback is the most common combination. Audiobooks can come later.

Step 3: Get your cover designed

Your cover is your book’s first impression, and on Amazon it’s often the only thing a reader sees before deciding whether to click. It needs to work as a tiny thumbnail and still look great in print.

Remember that print needs a full wrap cover (front, spine and back), sized to your page count. Here’s more on what makes a book cover sell.

Step 4: Format the interior

Your paperback needs a print-ready PDF with proper margins, typography and page layout. Your ebook needs a separate, reflowable file. They’re two different jobs.

I break it all down in Book Formatting for KDP: Print vs. eBook.

Step 5: Set up your KDP account and book details

On KDP you’ll enter:

  • Your book details: title, subtitle, author name, description
  • Keywords and categories, which help readers find you in search
  • Your ISBN: KDP offers a free one for paperbacks and hardcovers; ebooks don’t need one
  • Pricing and royalties
  • An honest answer about whether you used AI to create any of the content

Use your real information and keep it current. Amazon takes account verification seriously.

Step 6: Proof it, then publish

  • Check every page in KDP’s online previewer.
  • Order a printed proof of your paperback. Read it like a reader, not like the author.
  • Fix what you find, re-upload, and hit publish.

Step 7: Build your author platform

This is the step most first-time authors skip, and it’s the one that matters most for your next book.

  • An author website you own, with your books, your story and buy links (here’s what it needs)
  • An email list, so you can tell readers when the next book comes out
  • Matching graphics for social media and promotion

Step 8: Launch, and keep going

Plan your launch weeks ahead, email your list, ask for reviews, and keep promoting long after launch week. My book launch checklist walks through it.

You don’t have to do it all alone

The writing is the part only you can do. For the rest, from the cover and interior layout to your author website, that’s what Author Design Studios is here for. See the packages, or start with the free guide From Rejection to Revenue for the full roadmap.
