Book Formatting for KDP: Print vs. eBook, Explained
You finished the manuscript. Now you open the KDP upload page, and suddenly there are questions nobody warned you about. Trim size? Bleed? Reflowable? Gutter?
Book formatting is the least glamorous part of publishing, and one of the most noticeable when it’s done badly. Readers may never say “great margins,” but they’ll absolutely notice when a book feels homemade.
Here’s a plain-English guide to formatting your book for Amazon KDP, in print and as an ebook.
Print and ebook are two different jobs
This is the part that trips up most first-time authors. Your paperback and your ebook are formatted completely differently.
- Print is fixed. Every page looks exactly the way you designed it. You upload a print-ready PDF.
- Ebook is reflowable. Readers change the font, the text size and the screen, and your text flows to fit. You can’t control exactly where a line or page breaks.
That’s why you can’t just upload the same file for both and call it done.
Formatting your paperback
Pick a trim size
Trim size is the physical size of your book. Some common choices:
- 6 x 9 inches: the most common for nonfiction and business books
- 5.5 x 8.5 inches: popular for fiction and memoir
- 5 x 8 inches: a smaller, novel-friendly size
Look at a few books in your genre on your own shelf. Matching what readers are used to is never a bad idea.
Set your margins (and the gutter)
The gutter is the inside margin, where the pages meet the spine. Thicker books need a bigger gutter, or words disappear into the fold. KDP lists minimum margins by page count, and it’s worth going a little beyond the minimum so the page doesn’t feel cramped.
Decide on bleed
If any images or colors run to the edge of the page, your file needs bleed: a little extra (an eighth of an inch) that gets trimmed off. Most text-only interiors don’t need it.
Typography that’s easy to read
- A readable body font in a comfortable size (often 10 to 12 points, depending on the font).
- Comfortable line spacing, a bit more than single-spaced.
- Justified text with good hyphenation, so you don’t get big gaps between words.
- No widows and orphans, the single lonely lines stranded at the top or bottom of a page.
The professional touches
These are the details that make a book feel traditionally published:
- Chapters that start on a new page (often a right-hand page)
- Consistent chapter headings, and sometimes a drop cap or small caps on the first line
- Running headers with the book title and author name, and page numbers
- No headers or page numbers on blank pages and chapter openers
- Proper front matter: title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents
Export a print-ready PDF
Export a PDF with all fonts embedded, at your exact trim size (plus bleed, if you used it). Then use KDP’s online previewer to check every page, and order a printed proof before you hit publish. You’ll catch things on paper you’ll never see on screen.
Formatting your ebook
KDP accepts Word documents and EPUB files, and Amazon’s free Kindle Create tool can help you build a clean ebook from your manuscript.
For a reflowable ebook:
- Use real styles for headings and body text instead of manual formatting.
- Insert page breaks before each chapter.
- Build a linked table of contents so readers can jump to chapters.
- Skip the fancy layout. Columns, text boxes and exact spacing don’t survive reflowing.
- Keep images reasonably sized and in common formats.
- Preview on more than one device, including a phone, using Kindle Previewer.
Common formatting mistakes
- Using the same file for print and ebook
- Margins too small, especially the gutter on a thick book
- Mixing fonts and sizes from copy-and-paste
- Blank pages with page numbers or headers on them
- Spacing done with the space bar or Enter key instead of styles
- Skipping the printed proof
